Marriage & money

When you walk down the wedding aisle, you’re saying “I do” to a new way of handling your finances as well as to your (perfect, of course!) partner. Set the stage for a financially happy marriage with these tips.

Get financially aligned before the big day

Chances are you and your spouse will bring different financial backgrounds into your marriage. Being open and honest about your experiences, habits, and comfort levels ahead of time will pay off in the long run.

One of your families may be more affluent. One of you may rely more on credit cards, while the other prefers to avoid them. One of you may love budgeting and tracking expenses, while the other is simply focused on making sure the bills get paid.

Start those conversations now—you’ll be glad you did.

Talk through the details together

There are no right or wrong answers here—but having the discussion is what matters most.

Consider questions like:
  • Will you have individual checking accounts, a joint account, or both?
  • How will you divide or share everyday household expenses?
  • Who will manage paying the monthly bills?
  • How will you make decisions about big expenses like cars, vacations, or using credit cards?
  • What level of risk are you comfortable with when it comes to saving and investing?

Address challenges early

A healthy level of financial communication can help prevent frustration down the road.
  • Talk about spending habits early—both individual and shared—before they become a bigger issue. It may take time to find a balance that works for both of you.
  • Even if one person takes the lead on finances, keep the other informed. Not knowing account balances or spending can lead to confusion—or worse, overdrafts and resentment.
  • Include long-term goals—like saving for a child’s education or planning for retirement—in your conversations about the future you want to build together.
Cheers to many years of financial confidence as a couple!
